The Hirschmann MSP40-28-3A is a fully modular, fanless Gigabit industrial Ethernet switch for DIN rail installation, combining 24 Gigabit, four 2.5 Gigabit, and two 10 Gigabit Ethernet port capacities via the PowerMICE hot-swappable media module system with the advanced routing and switching capabilities of Hirschmann’s HiOS Layer 3 Advanced software. Built for industrial automation, energy distribution, traffic management, and critical infrastructure networks, the MSP40-28-3A allows engineers to configure precisely the media type and port density needed by populating available module slots with any combination of Hirschmann MSM media modules. Layer 3 routing functions include OSPFv2, RIPv1/v2, static routing, ECMP, full wire-speed routing, and IGMP Proxy and PIM multicast routing with DVMRP, PIM-DM, and PIM-SM/SSM support — making it well suited to advanced multicast and unicast routing requirements without a separate router. Switching features cover comprehensive VLAN management including QinQ, private VLAN, voice VLAN, IGMP snooping per VLAN, and QoS with 802.1D/p and TOS/DSCP prioritisation. Redundancy protocols include HIPER-Ring, MRP (IEC62439-2), MSTP, RSTP, VRRP, Link Aggregation with LACP, and Sub Ring Manager for resilient ring topologies. Security encompasses 802.1X port-based access control, RADIUS, TACACS+, dynamic ARP inspection, DHCP snooping, ACL-based filtering, and signed firmware images. Management is handled via HTTPS, SSH, SNMP v1/v2/v3, CLI, HTML5 web interface, and OPC-UA server, with support for PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, IEC61850, and Modbus TCP industrial protocols. Operating on 24V DC (18–32V), the MSP40-28-3A achieves an MTBF of over 997,000 hours at 25°C and mounts in 391 x 148 x 142 mm on standard DIN rail.
