Description
The Hirschmann OpEdge-8D is an industrial-grade DIN rail edge computing gateway purpose-built to process the large volumes of operational data generated in highly connected industrial environments. Manufactured by Hirschmann, a Belden brand, the OpEdge-8D runs on an Intel Atom E3950 processor at 1.6 GHz with 8 GB DDR3L memory and 64 GB SSD storage, delivering substantially more compute and storage capacity than entry-level alternatives. Its seven-port network configuration comprises five Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 LAN ports and two Gigabit Ethernet SFP WAN ports supporting fibre uplinks, plus dual Gen3 Gigabit Ethernet copper bypass to maintain network continuity during device failures or maintenance. Two USB 3.0 ports and two DB9 RS-232 serial interfaces ensure compatibility with a wide range of industrial peripherals and legacy automation equipment. The dual 20–54 V DC supply with a maximum 25 W power draw suits installation in industrial control panels and automation cabinets. Security features include AES-256 encryption, TPM 2.0, an integrated firewall, SSTP tunnelling, and full Belden Horizon cloud management supporting virtual lockout/tagout, SAML 2.0 SSO, multi-factor authentication, and audit trail logging. Application deployment is supported via Docker containers and virtual machines with orchestration through the Belden Horizon console. The OpEdge-8D is certified to DNV for shipbuilding, EN 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 for electrical substation environments, and carries CE and FCC approvals, making it well suited for energy utilities, maritime installations, railway infrastructure, and industrial automation deployments requiring robust, secure edge intelligence.
