EKI-1221/1222/1224 – Modbus Protocol Gateway by Advantech

The Advantech EKI-1221/1222/1224 series Modbus gateways are industrial-grade bi-directional protocol converters engineered to seamlessly integrate legacy Modbus RTU and Modbus ASCII serial devices into modern TCP/IP networked infrastructure. These gateways address the critical need for protocol translation in industrial automation, process control, and building management systems where serial field devices must communicate with Ethernet-based SCADA and HMI systems. The series offers flexible port configurations with the EKI-1221 providing one serial port, the EKI-1222 offering two ports, and the EKI-1224 delivering four ports, all with software-selectable RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 two-wire and four-wire interfaces. Each gateway features two independent 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports with separate MAC addresses enabling LAN redundancy for mission-critical applications. The advanced Modbus implementation supports up to 16 simultaneous connections per serial port in client mode and 64 sessions in server mode, with three data access modes including transparent mode for real-time data, intelligent cache for improved performance under multiple client access, and agent mode for fastest response times. The CI models incorporate galvanic isolation of 2 kV between serial to Ethernet and serial to power, along with 1 kV line-to-line and 2 kV line-to-ground surge protection for enhanced reliability in electrically noisy environments. Wide temperature variants operate reliably from -40 to 80°C, making them suitable for outdoor installations and harsh industrial conditions. The compact metal enclosure with IP30 rating supports both DIN-rail and wall mounting, while the 12-48 VDC redundant power input ensures continuous operation. Hazardous location certifications including UL Class I Division 2 and ATEX Zone 2 enable deployment in potentially explosive atmospheres found in oil and gas, chemical processing, and mining applications.
