Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at the heart of Industry 4.0. What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)
In a fast-paced, inter-connected world, machines are now able to make decisions, solve problems and drive efficiencies. This opens up almost unlimited opportunities for business. Many of the early commercial AI solutions were found in the consumer market, in phones and other small ‘smart’ devices. But computer science has now reached an advanced level where AI technology can make a significant contribution to any industry.
Harnessing AI to improve accuracy and optimise workflows
From healthcare to automotive; defence to manufacturing, organisations are harnessing AI to improve accuracy and optimise workflows. AI provides them with better and deeper analysis of images, measurements and machine performance. It is used to develop and innovate in diverse areas like military hardware, surveillance, facial recognition, driverless cars and cyber security. In short, AI represents the future of technology, and it is here today.
Artificial Intelligence and industrial automation What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Within manufacturing and industrial automation, AI is impacting every element of the supply chain. Cameras and sensors can detect faults and flaws much more quickly than the human eye. AI can also perform complex and laborious ‘human’ tasks like evaluating changing demand, coordinating deliveries and reordering stock. AI powers machine learning and predictive maintenance, eliminating the need for planned downtime. Failures in equipment can be preempted and addressed in a very targeted way. This increases the lifetime of the machinery and keeps it operational for longer.
Importantly, AI is moving from the cloud to directly influence edge computing
In the past, AI existed only in data centers with sufficient power to process such complex cognitive tasks. Now, new technologies are emerging that bring AI closer to users, allowing it to exist directly within software and devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT). This has made it possible to build AI into a live operational environment, where decisions and enhancements can be made in real-time.
Challenge for industry to optimise AI technology
One challenge for industry has been to optimise AI technology within existing hardware frameworks. While budgets for certain industries such as military and defence are able to incorporate new state-of-the-art technologies easily, in commercial or industrial settings, it can be difficult to find a way of building AI functionality into legacy hardware without making things too complex or prohibitively expensive.
And, for Artificial Intelligence to be fully effective, it has to be able to operate wherever a business needs it.
Recab: Artificial Intelligence innovation for any application
Recab works alongside customers to find solutions for any application. Our team of engineers develops new AI algorithms, or helps to optimise a customer’s own software to make it compatible with their hardware requirements.
Recab works with best-in-class suppliers to source the most rugged components. Then adapts them using AI to fit a customer’s brief and deliver the best performance.

Examples of solutions that Recab can offer
iSurvey is a dynamic company providing a range of advanced services for seabed surveying and positioning for offshore installations and ships. For one of iSurvey’s systems, there was a need to develop a more compact, robust modular support unit including positioning and communications electronics.
FluxSense mobile and stationary measurement centers are complex facilities with high demands of reliability for their technical solutions. FluxSense has chosen Recab’s products and services to ensure reliable industrial computers for their applications.
With EasyPay, you can easily drive in and out of a parking area without (a lot of) concern for payment and exceeded parking time. A tight cooperation between Recab and Profectum has resulted in a smart solution that eliminates stress when searching for a parking meter, and you will no longer be fined for a couple of extra minutes.
Recab will develop and deliver a flexible sensor-platform, and OT (Operational Technology) infrastructure to Smart Winter Roads project.

Radia Perlman – “the Mother of Internet”
Radia Perlman is an American engineer and mathematician, who has been called “the mother of internet” thanks to her contribution to technology development.
STP Protocol
Perlman invented the spanning tree algorithm and the spanning tree protocol (STP). STP enables network bridges to locate loops in a local area network (LAN) which solved a challenging information routing problem.
Perlmans Career
During her career Perlman has earned 80 patents and has written and co-written two textbooks. “Interconnections: Bridges, Routers, Switchers and Internet working Protocols” and “Network Security: Private Communication in a Public World.” Perlman has also taught courses at MIT, Harvard University and University of Washington.
Perlman has also been described as a pioneer of teaching young children computer programming. She developed a child-friendly version of the educational robotics language LOGO that was named TORTIS, “Toddlers Own Recursive Turtle Interpreter System”.
Awards and Prices
Perlman has been honoured with various prices and awards over the years. In 2004 she won the award Inventor of the Year by the Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association and was listed one of the 20 most influential people in information technology by Data Communications Magazine, in both its 20th and 25th anniversary editions.

Håkan Lans – famous Swedish inventor
Håkan Lans is a very famous Swedish inventor who is the mastermind behind various important inventions. His interest in technology started early and his first construction was an engine-driven soapbox car at the age of twelve. A few years later, when Håkan was 18, he designed and build a mini submarine which was able to go down as deep as 90 meters below surface. See a selection of Recab´s range within Defense and Avionic
Camera with colour generator
His inventions were noticed and when it was time for Lans to serve the military he served as a research assistant by the research facility. He came to work there for 10 years and during his time at the research centre he developed a very special camera with a colour generator to obtain a better picture. The camera could detect things under water, for example mines. In 1979 the patent was approved and later Lans discovered that the colour generator also worked in a computer to obtain colour graphics.
The STDMA navigation system
Lans greatest and most important invention was a navigation system, the STDMA (Self-organizing Time Division Multiple Access) that is used all over the world today. This navigation system uses both GPS and radio to determine where the user and other users who use the system are. Thanks to this navigation system airplanes and ships can avoid colliding. The same system is also used to prevent delays within the aviation industry and to reduce flight time.

Hedy Lamarr – WiFi, GPS & Bluetooth, technology
Hedy Lamarr was a famous actor, film producer and inventor. She is today mostly known for co-inventing an early version of frequency-hopping spread spectrum communication in 1941, then invented to protect Allied torpedo’s to be detected by theNazis. Today this technology is used in secure Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth, technology that is used by millions of people all over the world. Read more about our selection of Network Communications
Secret communication system
Lamarr’s greatest scientific triumph was intended for the US navy during the second world war, but is now used in modern wireless communication. Her “secret communication system” used “frequency hopping” to guide radio-controlled missiles underwater in a way that was undetectable by the enemy. It was Lamarr’s brainwave (though some say she may have first seen a sketch of a similar idea in the office of her first husband, the Austrian munitions manufacturer Fritz Mandl) and she developed it together with a friend, the composer George Antheil. The patent was granted in 1942.
During her career she also contributed within the aircraft industry and helped improving aircraft aerodynamics. “Inventions are easy for me to do – I don’t have to work on ideas, they come naturally” Hedy said. And we are very grateful for that.
