Executive Summary – Achieving Successful IT / OT Network Convergence
For years, office Information Technology (IT) networks and plant floor Operational Technology (OT) networks were wholly separate. On top of that, IT and OT personnel often had little to do with one another. With the advent of industrial Ethernet replacing fieldbus protocols on the plant floor, they now share a common network, creating valuable opportunities to combine resources and collaborate on goals for overall organizational success.

However, this network convergence also sets the stage for interactions – some might say showdowns – between IT and OT network personnel with very different training, experiences and cultures. The extent to which these necessary collaborations become adversarial or collaborative is dependent upon the approach taken by the organizations and individuals involved.

There is a great deal of misunderstanding about what convergence is and what it entails— for example, one group within the organization might be working toward the creation of one single, flat network while the other is attempting to segregate through technologies such as VLANs. The chances of success in this environment are low due to the steep learning curve and the opportunity for costly missteps when combining these different perspectives.

Fortunately, these challenges have become less necessary to endure. As more and more organizations converge their networks, there is a growing body of resources and best practices being published. Broad UV sensitivity
The GO-8105M-5GE-UV offers excellent sensitivity for applications across the UV spectrum. QE at 200 nm is around 25% meaning that even advanced applications requiring imaging well into the UVC spectrum are fully supported. The combination of high resolution and high sensitivity creates a wide range of possibilities for vision system developers.

Glass or glassless configurations
The GO-8105M-5GE-UV comes standard with a double-AR-coated, quartz glass cover over the sensor to protect the sensor from dirt and damage while maximizing light transmission. A glassless version (GO-8105M-5GE-UV-GL) has a protective glass cover on the sensor that can be removed by the user for applications where cover glass interference is problematic.

Small and reliable
The GOX-8105M-5GE-UV provides robust capability in a small form factor. The camera weighs less than 100 grams but carries shock and vibration ratings of 80G and 10G, respectively, to ensure that it can perform reliably in both industrial and scientific applications.

Applications where Go Series UV-sensitive cameras are especially suitable:

Electronics and corona inspection: Solar panels and other types of electronics may need UV imaging to look for signs og current leakage or other defects. UV cameras are also used to inspect power lines and transformers where non-visible “coronas” can indicate electrical problems.

Medical/Dermatology: UV lighting and imaging can detect damaged skin and subsurface issues at early stage before they become serious.

Semiconductors: UV cameras let inspections systems utilize extremely short light wavelengths so the smallest defects or surfaces can be imaged and analyzed

Pharmaceuticals:
Visions system for track and track and trace, pill sorting, inspecting vials and ampoules, and many other applications, often need to be able to “see” invisible product codes, lo numbers or other markings.

Security printing inspection: Bank notes, passports, lottery tickets, and other similar items may use special security markings only visible in the UV spectrum

As the industry keeps struggling with component shortages on just about every level, the shortage of electrical components is a significant problem for many companies. 

In particular, we see a trend in the field of  FPGAs, where the major vendor’s last-generation FPGAs are now typically difficult or even impossible to purchase. Lead-times for new orders may be 12 months or more and prices at distributors have risen to up to 100 times the normal prices in some cases.

This has led to a trend of saving lead-time and sometimes money by replacing these hard-to-find FPGAs with newer FPGAs from other vendors who can deliver the parts on time and at a lower price. But this requires a usually non-trivial effort to migrate the FPGA design to the new target and in most cases also a new hardware spin to accommodate the new FPGA footprint.

Challenge for the Synective Labs team
In a recent project, one of our customers had the need to replace a 45nm hard-to-buy FPGA in a 7-year-old design. As the customer’s hardware had gone through some rather extensive qualification process, it would have been very time-consuming to re-design the PCB and re-qualify the hardware. Instead, Synective Labs helped the customer replace the older FPGA with a new FPGA mounted on an interposer-card which acted as an adapter between the new and the old FPGA footprint. This means the customer got a drop-in replacement component without having to re-design any other hardware or do any re-qualification which saved time and money. 

Synective Lab’s experts were able to migrate the vendor-specific elements such as memory blocks, PLLs, clock networks, I/O-buffers and boot-structure to the new FPGA’s counterparts and re-target the design. The Interposer assembly was then used as a drop-in replacement for the old FPGA in the existing product without any changes to the main PCB or the firmware.

Together we identified and planned products based on Small Form Factor (SFF) designs to minimize cost with the most technically advanced solutions. This type of technical and marketing partnership is a key factor in our success. We’re excited about Alta’s new MEZ-E1553 Ethernet mezzanine micro-card that will allow us to offer quick design turns for 1553 systems based on the latest Intel i7-i9 and Atom processors. Their new MACsec Ethernet products will, once again, be industry leading interfaces.”

Jake Haddock, CTO of Alta states:
– “Our products target the COTS or modified COTS integrator to provide the most flexible avionics network options to their end-use customer. When we first saw SIP’s strategy, we recognized the potential synergies between our companies. Our Mini PCI Express, XMC and PMC boards, along with our real-time Ethernet converters, compliments SIPs’ modified COTS strategy. Their designs enable the customer to buy a lower cost, lab-grade system for prototype or development, and then directly migrate to a fully MIL qualified rugged, deployed system with little to no changes. All with quick delivery in weeks—not months. This is a significant technical, cost and time risk reduction for programs.”

At look at recent systems shipped by SIP include a rugged support computer forthe C-17, and an even smaller, avionics mission computer for the AC-130 Gunship, MC-130 and F-16 platforms. For the C-17system, SIP used their Hawkeye (pictured) system with Intel i7 processor, two Alta XMC MIL-STD-1553 and ARINC interface cards, and other COTS serial mini PCI Express modules to produce a system that was smaller, much more powerful, and about 30% less cost. The customer began development with the lab grade system, and then seamlessly moved to the full MIL rugged systems. For the C-130 and F-16 projects, SIP has shipped their full MIL grade Greyhound (about half size of the Hawkeye), mini system with Alta mini PCI Express 1553 cards, which are about half the size of a match book. SIP has already shipped 100s of these systems, with significant orders to follow.

More new products with in the MILSTD-1553 & ARINC – MEZ-E1553 mezzanine card
Another new Alta product provides even more flexible avionics design solutions. The MEZ-E1553 mezzanine card has multiple 1553 channels (and soon Enhanced Bit Rate 1553 – EBR) with an Ethernet backplane on a mini PCI Express size card. There are several advantages for a customer to select an Ethernet connection over a PCI Express or USB. First, is the portability of development applications to almost any operating system (OS), or further OS revisions. As almost every OS has Ethernet “socket” drivers built-in, where PCI Express and USB devices require custom device drivers that can go obsolete, or not be portable between OSes.

Next generation of 1553-Ethernet product
The second advantage is the ease of designing an Ethernet connection with almost any FPGA or processor design kit. These technologies almost always include reference designs and direct Ethernet support. Alta offers a MEZ-E1553 reference card with Ethernet, USB power, and design schematics that can connect to any computer system for software development and hardware verification.

The portability and simplicity of Alta’s 1553 and Ethernet protocol engines,
along with their modular, abstracted software development kit (or API) allows the customer to use their same application code across all of Alta’s product line— often without any code changes. This includes applications developed on PCI or PCI Express cards that can run directly on their Ethernet ENET, NLINE and MEZ-E1553 products, often without recompiling (actually run the same, raw executable between all products).

Alta’s next generation of 1553-Ethernet products will incorporate IEEE-802.11ae standards for secure, highly reliable, deterministic latency links. Alta plans to release various ENET and NLINE (1553 and ARINC electronics built directly in rugged cable assemblies) products with MACsec technology to address the obvious needs to provide a cyber secure connection between the computers an ENET end-point device. MACsec provides an encrypted link between end-point devices and switches, making physical intrusions virtually impossible. The first ENET products with MACsec will release towards Q3 2022.

The IGT-20 is based on AM3352 from Texas Instrument’s Sitara AM335x family and will be shipped as a ready system pre-installed with Debian. The industrial nature of IGT-20 means it is in compliance with common industrial certifications such as CE/FCC, shock and vibration. Another distinction IGT-20 has over SoM is that it accepts a wider range of power inputs ranging from 8 to 25 VDC (SoM usually accepts 5 VDC).

Four built-in isolated digital output channels
IGT-20 Series IoT Gateway has I/Os that are applicable to a range of industrial grade sensors. Advanced multi head function – Reading of an even larger field of view or of multiple surfaces. The SR-2000 Series not only offers an ultra-wide field of view but can also work in tandem with additional readers for an even wider field of view. Master stations are capable of summarising data from slave stations, allowing users to control multiple readers as if they were a single code reader. Because the host is not required to control multiple readers individually, programming work can be greatly reduced.

Data edit function – Customisable reading data output formatting

The customer needed an easy way to calibrate the system to get the optical center in the lens and camera to line up correctly.

The products is primarily used in border control and long-range surveillance. They are used all over the world so the system must work during all climates and weather conditions. This makes the demands on a camera very high and difficult.

Challenge for the Team players at Recab
The light conditions are very challenging, from direct sunlight in to the camera to the dark of the middle of the night.
Customer needed an easy way to calibrate the system to get the optical center in the lens and camera to line up correctly.
A way to keep the option of long exposure times, that is larger than 1s.
Easy integration with current set up.

Solution for the customer
By choosing a camera from Imperx with a Sony IMX265 sensor we got better resolution and light sensitivity than the previous camera. With HD-SDI interface it was the same as before, so ease of integration was accomplished. The camera also works in a wide temperature range -30 to +75 degrees witch makes the implementation easier for the customer.

The calibration was fixed by an mechanical change to the camera so that the front plate holding the lens and the rest of the camera was separated and adjustable. This saved the customer a lot of time in the calibration step.

A firmware change allowed for longer exposure times than the sensor normally supports.

Full HD resolution without loss of frame rate and better light sensitivity gives the operator a better image.

Let us introduce the MANO321, a fanless, low-profile mini-ITX Industrial motherboard with 5G capability that can be a flexible piece to develop IoT environments.

The MANO321 is powered by the low power consumption Intel® Celeron® processor J6412 (codename: Elkhart Lake); it’s equipped with two 260-pin DDR4-3200/2666/2400 SO-DIMM slots for up to 32G of system memory. Its low-profile design lowers the height of the board by half of the standard Mini-ITX form factor, making it more flexible for various IoT applications.

5G connection
To enable 5G connection, it has a SIM card slot and an M.2 Key B slot with USB 3.1 interface, which allows adding a 3042/3052 5G module to gain the connection. For display-related applications, the MANO321 supports triple-view with one HDMI 1.4b, one VGA, and one LVDS. Besides, it has HD Codec audio. In terms of expansion interfaces, the industrial motherboard provides one PCI Express Mini Card slot and one PCIe x4 slot with PCIe x2 signal.

Background to Recab Solution
A Swedish metal manufacturer had problems with reading DPM (Direct Part Marking) codes for track and trace applications. The product goes thru several stages like heating and panting etc. The code must be readable thru the whole process.

Challenge for the Team Players at Recab
Due to variation in light and reflections the code reader customer used was not able to read such codes. The time and waste of material on misreading becomes very costly and thus not profitable.

Solution for the customer
Recab went out at customer site and set up our code readers with the smart artificial intelligence software. The system then optimizes the settings to be able to read the code. The code could then be read with accuracy. The product that solve the problem is Keyence SR-1000 and SR-2000 series – a fixed mount readers with an easy handling for the customer.

Extra Facts – What is Barcode/Two-dimensional Code Verification?
“Barcode verification” refers to checking the marking quality of CODE39, CODE128, and EAN barcodes. Barcodes are used in a variety of fields such as FA, distribution, food, wholesale, and medical products.

“Two-dimensional code verification” refers to checking the marking quality of DataMatrix symbols and QR code symbols. Two-dimensional codes have spread to a wide variety of fields, and there are many cases in which the same two-dimensional code is read at multiple work sites.

Examples include between automotive parts suppliers and automobile manufacturers, between medicine manufacturers and pharmacies, and between smartphone module manufacturers and assembly manufacturers.

Two-dimensional codes are marked on key parts at the part or module manufacturer and are read at the assembly manufacturer. This makes it possible to obtain information such as the product characteristics and serial number, which is put to use in maintaining production and quality.Barcodes or two-dimensional codes that are difficult to read hinder productivity. Various code verification standards have been developed as quantitative guidelines aimed at eliminating this problem.

Highlights:

Cylindrical lens – Parallel light is emitted using a cylindrical lens designed to prevent the reflected light from scattering across the surface of the target. This ensures reliable reflections from any shape or surface.

With improved X-axis and Z-axis precision, it’s possible to holder tighter tolerances over a wider inspection area. This significantly expands the types of applications that can use 3D measurement.

Maximising resolution and target detection
To improve the resolution of the sensor, the number of pixels on the CMOS needs to be increased, which can be accomplished by making each pixel smaller. But smaller pixels can result in insufficient light to create an accurate profile of some target shapes or surfaces. For the LJ-X series, we’ve implemented new technology to create a laser profiler capable of high resolution measurement on any target.
