Providing a rich and versatile feature set of switching functions, Kontron’s CERES-2402-PTP is a deployable 26-port (24x 1GbE, 2x 10GbE) fully managed Layer 2/Layer 3 non-blocking Ethernet switch packaged in a compact form factor. Its rugged and fanless design makes the CERES-2402-PTP highly resistant to shock and vibrations while ensuring performance in extended temperature environments and long-term availability. The high-speed network capability via the 10GbE links makes it ideal for applications such as situational awareness, imaging, and sensor data. Furthermore, its optimized size (351 x 144 x 59 mm), weight and power (SWaP) allow it to be used in areas where space and available power are restricted.

SWaP-constrained platforms deploying Ethernet backbones
The Kontron CERES-2402-PTP is therefore well-suited to installation at the tactical network edge on-board unmanned air, maritime and ground vehicles, helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, tactical ground vehicles, missile defense, and other SWaP-constrained platforms deploying Ethernet backbones.
The switch provides up to 44 Gbps
Based on a switch fabric with an integrated QorIQ® management processor, the CERES-2402-PTP can be monitored via SNMP over serial line or Ethernet Web-based management while a comprehensive command line interface enables Layer 2/3 management including full IPv6 support. The switch provides up to 44 Gbps of line-rate multi-layer forwarding, along with advanced network security, data, and video and voice services (on-request), all supported by embedded Fastpath Software.

Certified to MIL-STD-1275D,MIL-STD-461 F and MIL-STD-810G
Other switching features include IP forwarding & Multicast, Routing & Switching, Quality of Service and VLANs for enabling complex network routing. Precision Time Protocol support enables precise timing synchronization and packet time stamping for time sensitive applications. The switch is certified to MIL-STD-1275D for 28 VDC power supply, MIL-STD-461 F electromagnetic compatability and MIL-STD-810G shock resistant.

JAI: Get simultaneous imaging of one monochrome and two NIR light bands with new 3-CMOS area scan camera
JAI has added a new area scan camera to its Fusion Series of multi-spectral industrial cameras. The new 3-CMOS camera (FS-1600T-10GE-NNM) features three separate multispectral wavebands. The new model features the Sony Pregius IMX273 CMOS sensor offering 1.6-megapixel resolution (1440 x 1080 pixels) and a 1/2.9” optical format.

By splitting the NIR information into “low” and “high” bands, the FS-1600T-10GE-NNM helps designers of multi-spectral vision systems to deliver better results by leveraging the different way that some biological substances (in life sciences applications), foods, chemicals, and other materials appear when viewed in different portions of the NIR spectrum.

FluxSense: Industrial computers from Recab
to measure emissions

Gas emission specialist FluxSense, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, developed as a spin-off company from Chalmers University of Technology in 2001 and uses unique technology to measure emissions. FluxSense mobile and stationary measurement centers are complex facilities with high demands of reliability for their technical solutions. FluxSense has chosen Recab’s products and services to ensure reliable industrial computers for their applications.

Customer case – FluxSense: Industrial computers from Recab to measure emissions
The importance of knowledge of gas emissions.
Back in 2001, FluxSense AB started off as a spin-off company from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg on the Swedish west coast. They wanted to provide the ability to execute reliable diffuse emission measurements for the petroleum and petrochemical industry. Since the start they have operated in close partnership with Chalmers University of Technology. The CEO still works part time as a professor at the university and most of their eight employees in Sweden are former postgraduates.

Increasing regulations to improve environmental health 
Gas emissions from anthropogenic (man-made) and biogenic (natural) sources contribute to a wide range of environmental problems. Some examples are climate change, ozone depletion, air pollution, photochemical smog, acidification and eutrophication. Increasing regulations, regulatory oversight, and efforts to improve environmental health have made measurements of emission from production facilities a standard in Europe (CEN). With The Paris Agreement regulations and requirements for proper measurements are spreading across the globe.

Knowledge about the emissions and concentrations of the gases leaving industries are crucial for efficient regulations and abatement measures. Diffuse (non-channeled) emissions from large facilities have, historically, been expensive, troublesome if even possible to measure. This has led to idealized calculations based on models and estimations. Which leads to results far from correct due to inaccurate input of data and algorithms.


The techniques for measure emissions
FluxSense AB is the sole licensee for the Solar Occultation Flux (SOF [Technologoy:SOF]) technique and have developed other techniques as well. The SOF technique was developed at Chalmers University. When the requests for usage of the technique grew the company was founded. The technique uses infra-red lights and through optical spectroscopy they study how different gas emissions changes the color of the sunlight.

Emission Quantification, Leak Search, Concentration Mapping, and Air Quality Monitoring
FluxSense AB can therethrough measure the amounts of gas emissions leaving a facility. They can also measure what type of gases the facility is leaking or identify previously unknown gas leaks. Their solution focuses on mainly four services, Emission Quantification, Leak Search, Concentration Mapping, and Air Quality Monitoring.

“In addition of receiving numbers of their emissions in kilograms/hour, which is of interest for both the industries themselves and the authorities, our customers learn their facility and we can find leakages they didn’t know they had. Leakages that can result in a large part of their total emissions.” Oscar Isoz at FluxSense says.

In the beginning, FluxSense AB solely offered services to help measure emissions such as hydrocarbons from industries. During the past two of years, they have expanded their business and developed their solutions to be able to provide their customers with both mobile (customer controlled) and stationary (remotely controlled by FluxSense AB) measurement centers.

High demands for industrial computers
For the first measurement systems they sold they used laptops. The laptops were moved in and out of the cars, a solution that was ineffective and unreliable. Since the measurement system is a complicated system in itself, there is no place for the computers to be a factor of error. Because of this FluxSense started looking into using industrial computers instead. This is when they came in contact with Recab.

– “We needed two simple, yet very reliable computers that could process and conduct these measurements within our mobile and our stationary solutions, Samuel Brohede at FluxSense says. “It is of the highest importance that the computers are able to make the measurements at all times or at the programmed time. If the computers fail the measurements fail and become unreliable, which defeats the whole purpose.”

The mobile solutions must be user-friendly
The demand for a reliable product is high both for the mobile and the stationary solutions. The computers must be able to run the systems and store measurement data. The mobile solutions must be user-friendly for the customers and easily operated. The computers in the stationary solutions operates twenty-four hours a day. They must be able to process the data and deliver reliable numbers at all times. The computers have high demands of being rugged and durable as well.

-“Both sun and wind conditions are essential to be able to perform some of our measurement techniques” Brohede says. “Depending on the weather our possible measurement days, or even hours, can be very limited. Therefore, it is absolute necessary that the computers work whenever they are needed.”

Industrial computers with higher operational reliability
The industrial computers have higher operational reliability. are rugged to endure stress from vibrations and wide ranges of operational temperatures. Another advantage is that the modules aren’t changed as often as commercial computers. This ensures that FluxSense can assist their customers and provide them with support, and if needed spare parts, easily.

-“We think the cooperation with Recab has worked really, really well.” Oscar Isoz says “As soon as we have had a question, we have received a detailed response and have received a lot of help throughout the years. We feel like we did the right choice when choosing you as a supplier two years ago. There are many industrial computers that malfunctions, but these have worked very well so far.”

FluxSense view of their future for measure emissions
The company have since the beginning conducted well over 100 measurement campaigns of industrial and agricultural emissions in Europe, America and Asia. The main office remains in Sweden and FluxSense employees travel all over the world to assist their customers. They have opened up a branch called FluxSense Incorporated on the west coast in the US with two employees stationed there. Since then their business opportunities in the US have grown to be equal if not larger than in Sweden.

-“As of now we work mainly with the authorities in the US, but with the current change of view of the environment and what needs to be done, we are sure to see the interest of companies self-interest in these types of solutions grow.”Isoz concludes.“We see positively at our future, we have conducted measurements for many years now. The techniques and our company have become established and well known, more requests are coming in.

A large market for these kinds of solutions is East Asia. We have already conducted a couple of measurements in China and hope to expand our business there as well as in the US and Europe. The Paris Agreement and other universal environmental agreements like it puts pressure on the authorities as well as the industries to ensure that they have knowledge of what kinds of emissions they let out into the air and regular tests may become mandatory, we provide an effective solution and are eager to help facilities all over the globe.”

Deep Learning Add-on

A breakthrough technology for machine vision. It is a set of five ready-made tools which are trained with 20-50 sample images, and which then detect objects, defects or features automatically. Internally it uses large neural networks designed and optimized by our research team for use in industrial vision systems.
Together with Adaptive Vision Studio you are getting a complete solution for training and deploying modern machine vision applications.


  • Learns from few samples
    Typical applications require between 20 and 50 images for training. The more the better, but our software internally learns key characteristics from a limited training set and then generates thousands of new artificial samples for effective training.
  • Works on GPU and CPU
    A modern GPU is required for effective training. At production, you can use either GPU or CPU. GPU will typically be 3-10 times faster (with the exception of Object Classification which is equally fast on CPU).
  • The highest performance
    Typical training time on a GPU is 5-15 minutes. Inference time varies depending on the tool and hardware between 5 and 100 ms per image. The highest performance is guaranteed by WEAVER, an industrial inference engine.

Imaging Source – NVIDIA Jetson Nano development kit: The development kits come equipped with a flashed SD card containing all necessary MIPI CSI-2 or FPD-Link III drivers and a custom-designed system image. This image includes significant convenience functionality such as Jupyter notebooks, enabling developers to quickly get started with the camera sensor via GStreamer elements.

All sensors use either the standard video4linux API or NVIDIA’s proprietary API based on the libargus programming interface. The video4linux interface for example provides RAW video data and allows direct control of all sensor parameters.

Leveraging the hardware ISP (Image Signal Processor) available on all Jetson platforms, the NVIDIA libargus interface delivers a processed video stream to the application with de-mosaicing, color correction and white balance algorithms applied.

The Imaging Source provides a default configuration file for the ISP. Using the GStreamer interface for libargus, the application can interface with NVIDIA’s standard Jetson ecosystem software stack which enables the efficient integration of powerful image processing frameworks such as DeepStream, Visionworks and others.

What is VPX
– Specifically designed to enable high performance

VPX products are widely deployed in military and aerospace environments due to their robust, high performance nature. Rugged variants are usually available based on a rigorous testing cycle to ensure reliability in severe operating temperatures, shock, vibration, altitude and other environmental factors.

What is VPX – specifically designed to enable high performance -The OpenVPX framework defines the clear interoperability points necessary for integration between Module to Module and Module to Backplane and Chassis. The Specification describes the technical implementation details for 3U and 6U VPX payload and switch modules in an attempt to provide clear guidance on how to build interoperable computing and communication platforms.

Technologies called for in VPX specifications include:

  • 3U VPX Single Board Computers
  • 6U formats
  • High performance connector now rated up to 25 Gbit/s

  • Direct coaxial (VITA 67) and fibre (VITA 66) connections

The technology was originally created in 2007, based on serial fabrics that are point to point in nature.  Owned By VITA, and as a successor of the VME standards, the VPX (VITA 46) standards were created to deliver more robust, high-speed performance for data-intensive, high bandwidth applications. VITA’s goal was to provide a future proofed standard that would be used to create rugged solutions for applications in the military, aerospace, transportation and industrial markets.

Most of the previous open standards, including VPX, have typically focused on board level requirements, but there is also a need for considering system-level requirements to improve interoperability and reduce customization, testing, cost, and risk. Based on key customer feedback the original VPX specification evolved to include OpenVPX™ profiles for multi-vendor integrated environments. The working group was formed in 2009, with a goal to improve the interoperability of 3U and 6U boards through the implementation of predefined profiles, and thus to lower the risk of adoption, expand the addressable market for VPX solutions and accelerate the deployment of the solutions into defense related applications.

OpenVPX is a development of, and complementary to, VPX. The OpenVPX (VITA 65) Specification was ratified by ANSI in June 2010. Whilst widely adopted, it was recognized that OpenVPX still made technology transitions difficult and caused system integrators difficulties.  Two main issues were the mix of +5V and +12V power supplies and the proliferation of vendor specific user I/O pin implementations.  SOSA/HOST/CERDEC groups formed driving further changes to VITA 65.0 and VITA 65.1 standards in 2019. The aforementioned groups formed with a series of open architecture goals in mind. These goals include: enabling cost savings/avoidance, facilitating technology refresh, improving interoperability, faster incorporation of innovation, and enhancing competition for components. The emergence of such groups also provided a platform to check for compliance of and the effectiveness of the standards.

VPX boards utilize alignment/keying blocks which are designed to be suitably robust:  A 6U board has three such keying blocks, while a 3U board has two.The VPX connector is specifically designed to enable high performance. It accomplishes this through a 7-row 16-wafer (wafers can be power, differential or single-ended) that delivers highly controlled impedance, minimal insertion loss and less than 3% crosstalk at transfer rates up to 6.25 Gbit/s. These statistics will be a great deal better for newer connector types, such as the Tyco Electronics MULTIGIG TR 3, with some transfer rates reaching up to 25 Gb/s.

The new connector enables a 6U VPX board to feature a total of 707 non-power electrical contacts and a total of 464 signal contacts, meaning that compared to other standards, VPX offers higher connection density and improved performance Furthermore, VITA 48 now Includes additional standards for more exotic cooling technologies including Air and Liquid Flow Through.

One other key benefit of using VPX technologies, is the fact it is widely adopted and promoted. VPX boards feature in a number of applications, including: Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR), Radio Detecting and Ranging (RADAR), Signals Intelligence (SIGINT), Electronic Warfare (EW), and a number of test and simulation applications. Due to the high level of adoption and promotion, there is a constant push for newer, more progressive innovations. We have seen, in the past 10 years or so, a great deal of development towards ever higher connection speeds, and more recently roadmap towards PCIe Gen 5, 100GbE technology. There is a great deal of work going on behind the scenes, so we can be certain that there is more room for progression in the near future.

While VME was based on a bus, with signals daisy-chained at each slot, VPX is based on switched fabrics. The single biggest difference between today’s VMEbus boards and VPX boards is that VPX boards use a new connector.  The boards are designed around a connector suitable for high speed, rugged applications.  Initially connectors were available from a single vendor but now alternative and higher performance variants are available, such as that of
Tyco Electronics MULTIGIG RT3 and RT 2-S and Amphenol’s R-VPX Ruggedized.

The VPX specification outlines that a 6U VPX board features six 16-column 7-row connectors and one 8-column 7-row connector, while a 3U board features two 16-column 7-row connectors and one 8-column 7-row connector. One reason the VPX board was created, was to provide a higher-powered alternative to the VMEbus technologies readily available at the time. Typically, VME based systems have limited power budgets, whereas using VPX technology enables the possibility of using much higher performance products that can draw significantly more power.

The ultrasonic sensors can be used to detect the presence of people, for example in front of termoscanners.
The goal of these tools is simple: to detect the body temperature of persons who intend to enter an open-to-public- place (bar, restaurant, cinema …), indicating the cases in which the temperature exceeds the safety limits.

In this way, customers will have the guarantee of a safe environment and will be able to visit the restaurant without any fear of their health. In the application described, the ultrasonic sensor of Micro Detectors it is installed in the upper part of the totem to locate the user in front of it, thus starting the temperature detection operation.

The ultrasonic products are based on one of the few technologies that operate independently of the shape and color of the object and is not influenced, for example, by the environment light.With the same system, this technology can therefore be implemented for those applications where it is necessary to identify the presence of people and monitor their inflow and/or outflow. Sanitization systems with ultraviolet light

Refrigerators used in supermarkets, canteens or refreshment areas, can be sanitized by installing an ultraviolet lamp.
In fact, UV-C ultraviolet light is effective against most bacteria, germs and viruses. However, prolonged exposure by users can be harmful to health.

Therefore it is necessary to disable it in the presence of customers or operators. Launch: New USB-to-HDMI Converter

Direct Camera to Monitor Imaging: Typical machine vision applications use dedicated computers to perform image processing and analysis. Supports resolutions up to 4K (3840x2160) at 15 fps; Full HD up to 60 fps

Some simple monitoring and visualization tasks do not, however, require these levels of image processing. Such tasks are most efficiently solved by delivering images directly from camera to monitor — eliminating the need for and associated costs of dedicated computer hardware. Expressly designed for this purpose, the USB-to-HDMI converter generates an HDMI signal from The Imaging Source’s USB3 camera image data. Camera settings like exposure and gain can be configured via an on-screen menu and are automatically restored on startup.

The converter supports all 33U and 37U-series cameras from The Imaging Source with native display resolution up to 4K. There are easy-to-use on-screen menus for camera and display settings via USB keyboard.

Launch: Customizable multi spectral area cameras from JAI

Flex-Eye by JAI is a new and innovative camera concept that enables customization of the size and location of wavebands in JAI’s Fusion Series 2-CMOS and 3-CMOS prism-based multispectral cameras.

By combining the Flex-Eye customization process with the existing Fusion Series prism-based cameras, it is now possible for customers to design a multispectral camera that looks at specific visible and near infrared waveband ranges to meet the exact requirements of their vision application.

Like JAI’s standard Fusion Series multispectral cameras, the Flex-Eye process starts by allowing you to choose from a two- or three-sensor prism configuration outfitted with either 1.6-megapixel or 3.2-megapixel Sony Pregius CMOS global shutter imagers. After that, it is up to you. Define specific wavebands as narrow as 25nm wide, located exactly where you need them across the visible and NIR spectral ranges.

Configuration is simply made by using JAI’s own online Flex-Eye configurator. The online configurator provides an easy, step-by-step process to define your ideal solution. After specifying the number and type of sensors and the resolution an intuitive GUI let you drag and place wavebands on a spectral chart with built-in validation rules to guide you to a successful configuration.

Hirschmann GECKO switches

Camera with autofocus and auto iris with PoE from The Imaging Source

The Imaging Source just released a new zoom as a first in a new family of GigE zoom cameras. It features 20x optical zoom, autofocus and auto iris with Power over Ethernet (PoE). The cameras is available in both mono and color and has the Sony Pregius IMX265 sensor with 3.1MP.

With the sensors global shutter, it is suitable for imaging even fast-moving objects. The low distortion and high dynamic range also help you to get really good images. It also has a mechanical IR cut filter, precise stepper motors to control both zoom and focus and all features is controlled by the supplied software.

The camera is ideally suited for a wide range of machine vision tasks where objects vary in size or distance such as automation, quality inspection logistics and ITS(intelligent traffic systems).

Applications of the camera:
Remote monitoring of processes: Sometimes there is a need to monitor manufacturing or other process from a distance, then it is good to be able to partly get an overview image – zoomed out position, and to be able to see specific details – zoomed in location.

With this camera you can advantageously achieve this. If you choose to connect with one of our cloud services from Insys, you can monitor and control the camera from any location, for example if the machine is with your customer, you can manage the camera from your office.

Variations in size:
In production, quality control is often done with the help of cameras. This is difficult if you make parts with different sizes in the same production line. Previously, you had to adjust focus manually or have multiple cameras. Now you can do this automatically and have a couple of fixed positions that you alternate between. This retains the advantages of fixed optics but provides greater flexibility and a cheaper solution in a single camera.
